Depending on the State there are four distinct systems in how voters choose their candidate(s):\u00a0the preferential vote,\u00a0closed list vote,\u00a0the mixed vote\u00a0et le\u00a0the single transferable vote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 A five-year renewable term in office<\/strong><br \/>\nEvery new election gives rise to a major\u00a0renewal\u00a0in the European hemicycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Incompatibility of mandates<\/strong><br \/>\nAn MEPs mandate is incompatible with all other roles in the community institutions and organisations. The role of MEP is incompatible with that of the national MP (UK and Ireland were exceptions to this rule in the 2004 elections).
