European Political Parties<\/h1>\n

It was only with the Maastricht Treaty of 1992 that\u00a0political parties<\/strong>\u00a0were mentioned for the first time on a European level.
\nToday it is a regulation dating back to 2003 which defines them.<\/p>\n

Several criteria enable the definition of a\u00a0European political party<\/strong>: its legal personality, its representativeness on a national level or during the previous European elections, its respect for the founding principles of the European Union and finally its participation in the European elections.<\/p>\n

10 parties are currently registered to the Authority for European Political Parties and European Political Foundations<\/a><\/p>\n

The two largest parties are the European People’s Party<\/a> (EPP) and the Party of European Socialists<\/a> (PES).<\/p>\n

Every year the European Union publishes an appeal in view of granting a subsidy\u00a0to finance European political parties<\/strong>.
\nThe procedures enables it to check that the criteria for the acquisition of European political party status are being respected and to define the total of the subsidy being granted, which cannot exceed 85% of the eligible costs of the functioning budgets of these parties.<\/p>\n

We should not confuse European political parties and the\u00a0\u201cpolitical groups\u201d<\/a>\u00a0within the European Parliament which were formed informally when the European Community of Steel and Coal was established in 1952.
\nA political group rallies the\u00a0MEPs of various Member States<\/strong>\u00a0together with the same political leanings.<\/p>\n
