In addition to this, the fact that the parties represented in the European Parliament will be appointing a lead candidate who could become the President of the Commission if that party wins in the European elections, should be a major political stake in this election.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Parliament is the only institution to be elected by direct universal suffrage.<\/li>\n<li>The Parliament is the only institution which represents the citizens.<\/li>\n<li>On this occasion the citizens can have their say and give their opinion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since every national political party presents its own candidates it is up to each voter to choose the representatives who\u00a0<strong>embody his\/her ideological or partisan preferences.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hence European voters can influence the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elections-europeennes.robert-schuman.eu\/the-parliamentary-committees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political composition of the European Parliament<\/a>, which is called to act in the legislative procedure on the European Union\u2019s main orientations and decisions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"info\">\n<p>The European Parliament elections are a decisive moment for European citizens who want to play a role in the running of the European Union; there are three types of choice they can make:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 a\u00a0<strong>civic choice<\/strong>\u00a0since the increasing powers of the European Parliament will help the voter influence the decisions taken by the European Union directly;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 a\u00a0<strong>partisan choice<\/strong>\u00a0because it helps the voter appoint the representatives who increasingly express their opinion based on ideological criteria;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 and a\u00a0<strong>choice of national influence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A civic choice<\/h2>\n<div class=\"bloc\">\n<p>As the treaties have succeeded one another MEPs have acquired\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2024.electionseuropeennes.eu\/en\/legislative-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislative<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2024.electionseuropeennes.eu\/en\/budgetary-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">budgetary powers<\/a>\u00a0together with major powers of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2024.electionseuropeennes.eu\/en\/power-of-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supervision<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning the European Parliament was dominated by the notion of institutional endorsement with regard to the European Commission and the Council of the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"content_page bloc\">\n<div class=\"post\">\n<div class=\"post_content\">\n<div class=\"info\">\n<div class=\"bloc\">\n<h2>A partisan choice<\/h2>\n<div class=\"bloc\">\n<p>As its powers have increased this notion has tended to decline to the benefit of\u00a0<strong>increasingly distinct partisan divisions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Division does not only affect the\u00a0<strong>development of the construction of Europe<\/strong>\u00a0which has both its supporters and adversaries, but it also\u00a0<strong>affects real political decisions<\/strong>\u00a0thereby bringing the differences in opinion between the various parties to the fore.<\/p>\n<p>These\u00a0<strong>political differences<\/strong>\u00a0emerge not only during voting on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elections-europeennes.robert-schuman.eu\/methods-employed-for-the-adoption-of-legislative-acts\/#directive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directives<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elections-europeennes.robert-schuman.eu\/the-types-of-european-legislative-acts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulations<\/a>, on economic issues or on those relative to the \u201carea of freedom, security and justice\u201d for example but also in the\u00a0political platforms of the various European political parties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bloc\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>A choice of national influence<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Whilst several\u00a0studies\u00a0undertaken since 2004 show the weakness of\u00a0<strong>French representation in the European Parliament<\/strong>, the European elections provide an opportunity to choose the representatives who will strengthen\u00a0<strong>French influence on a community level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the European Parliament is now marked by a partisan approach, MEPs\u2019 national sensitivity also finds expression with regard to a number of issues.<\/p>\n<p>Enhancing national influence notably supposes\u00a0<strong>privileging political parties that have a high profile in the European Parliament<\/strong>(the European People\u2019s Party (EPP), the Party of European Socialists (PES) and to a lesser degree, the Alliance of Liberal and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and the European Green Party and\u00a0<strong>representatives who are best qualified<\/strong>\u00a0to fulfil the role granted to them via the vote.<\/p>\n<p>But of course, it is up to the voters to decide whether they want to make a choice of national influence or not, which supposes privileging political parties that have a high profile in the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1695913889717{margin-top: 50px !important;margin-bottom: 50px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column][vc_wp_custommenu nav_menu=&#8221;89&#8243;
